ABANGSAPAU
ABANGSAPAU is a 21-year-old Malay-Sikh hip hop artiste who isn’t afraid to challenge the boundaries of the local music scene. Known for donning his sarung, ABANGSAPAU is a firm proponent of representing his culture and ethnicity in his artistry. Within a year of his beginning, the rapper went from paying his dues at underground gigs to performing at the nationwide National Day Parade 2020 and Mediacorp’s 2020 New Year’s Eve Countdown concert. In February 2021, ABANGSAPAU appeared on Lazada’s LazMall Brand Fiesta Campaign that was rolled out nationwide.
ABANGSAPAU boldly embodies what it means to breathe different meaning into Southeast Asian rap, inspiring uniqueness and individuality in his listeners. The hip hop artiste prioritises vulnerability and honesty in his songwriting process – the truths of his past and present are woven together with one mission: to create music that resonates with and uplifts his community. A mission whose horizons has expanded in the last year as the artiste went from giving his own TEDx Talk to signing with Def Jam Singapore. The rapper and songwriter shows no lack of artistic range and, in embracing his versatility, pushes the boundaries of what is commonly “hip hop”. ABANGSAPAU writes of love, pain, and virtue, reminding hip hop fans that there is more to the art of rap and storytelling than clout and chasing highs.
